About
Dhyani
Asian Arts The
name Dhyani |
|
We are
specialised in a diversity of Indian and Southeast Asian art, but mainly
focus on early South Indian and Khmer art. The
current collection ranges from 18th century South Indian bronzes, kalamkaris, to excellent Chola and
Khmer pieces, whether Hindu or Buddhist. All
items come from private or institutional collections from Europe and the
United States. Dhyani is derived from
Dhyān(a). According to the Hindu Yoga
Sutra Dhyāna is one of the eight methods of Yoga, (the other seven
methods are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, and Samadhi). In the Astanga Yoga of Patanjali, the stage of meditation preceding
Dhyāna is called dharana. In Dhyāna, the meditator is not
conscious of the act of meditation (i.e. is not aware that s/he is meditating)
but is only aware that s/he exists (consciousness of being), and aware
of the object of meditation. |
